Rebellion and Protest Across Six Centuries: joint BALH SDNQ conference, 17 October 2026

The committee of SDNQ are delighted to announce that they have teamed up with the British Association for Local History (BALH) to host a joint one-day conference at Sherborne on 17 October 2026.

Rebellion and Protest Across Six Centuries will explore how rebellion, protest and popular resistance have shaped communities, identities and historical memory across six centuries.

From medieval revolt to twentieth-century industrial action, the programme brings together a distinguished panel of leading historians who will examine how ordinary people have challenged authority and expressed dissent:

  • Prof. Andrew Prescott – The Peasants’ Revolt in Somerset.
  • Tim Goodwin – Did power in Dorset change hands during and immediately after the civil war?
  • Steve Carter – The Sufferings of John Coad and the Dorset Rebels.
  • Prof. Steve Poole – Heritage, Memory and Rebellion in England and Wales.
  • Prof. June Hannam – An Industrial Red Cross: Labour women’s support for the miners’ lockout of 1926 in the south west.

Date and time: Saturday, 17 October 2026, 10 am – 4 pm.
Venue: The Digby Hall (next to the library), Hound Street, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3AA.
Tickets: £20 for BALH & SDNQ members | £25 non‑members. Price includes a buffet lunch, tea, coffee and biscuits. SDNQ members will find their discount code in the March 2026 issue of the journal.
