On 28th January 2023, Professor Steve Poole, who is not only a member of SDNQ’s Editorial Board but also Professor of History and Heritage at UWE and Director of the University’s Regional History Centre, will be giving a free talk at Yeovil Library in which he will be looking at the 1831 reform riots in Yeovil.
The three-year ESRC-funded research project – ‘Intergroup dynamics within the 1831 reform riots: towards a new social psycho-history’ – is led by the University of West of England’s Regional History Centre in collaboration with the University of Sussex, Bristol Culture and the artist collective Satsymph. The project is focusing on case studies in communities in Dorset, Somerset, Gwent, Worcester and Bristol which reflect diverse social, economic and cultural variables.
This talk is part of a series of lectures being given by the project team in communities around the south-west – Blandford Forum, Sherborne, Yeovil, Bath, Newport, Worcester and Bristol – where reform riots took place during a two month period in 1831 after the House of Lords voted to reject Lord Grey’s bill for parliamentary reform.
